Global equities posted strong gains during the first quarter of 2017, driven by signs of improving economic growth and increased confidence in growth prospects for economies and businesses going forward. Indeed, optimism about the overall market abounded:

• Consumer confidence and small-business optimism readings hit their highest levels in years.
• Market volatility among major indices was historically low. U.S. stocks (as measured by the S&P 500) didn’t register a daily decline of 1% or more for approximately five months.
